In 2004, driving from the airport in São Paolo, I saw a massive bridge with a cluster of maybe 100 shacks - a favela - built on the hillside around one of the columns. It hit me, then, that this was what the Republican/conservative/Reaganites wanted for the US - riches that can build a massive bridge, and systemic poverty that forces the mass of people to live under it.
That was my Hungary 2019 moment. Before, I had thought that poverty in the US was an imperfection in the system. After, I knew it was a deliberate plan, and understood that that plan might succeed. Two decades after Reagan, two decades before today, I saw it coming in that picture of the favela under the bridge.
For the past year I've been thinking we were speed-running Nazi Germany, but I didn't know what could stop our military. Now I think it'll be economic; the US (forcing Iran) and Russia (forcing Ukraine) have taken 25% of the world's oil offline, probably for months, and it could go higher.
People were literally starving in Germany after WWII. I wonder if we'll recapitulate that? I wonder if China has a Marshall Plan ready for us?
Today was another one of those days where I am listening to you speak, especially about the idea of competitive authoritarianism, and again, especially about the fact that this is not specifically about Trump, the one man who is the face of our current decline into autocracy. But rather that this is everything that went into producing the Project 2025 plans, which was clearly available to anyone who was paying attention, and yet our traditional institutions failed to see the danger presented, not believing it would all come to pass the way it is now is unfolding. I saw it. You saw it. Perhaps a few others, but too many were blinded by the shitstorm. But make no mistake, as you say, that the architects of Project 2025, most of the current GOP legislators, and the soldiers in the administration who are now implementing it, are the true actors behind the scenes, of which Trump is just the ugly orange face and chief feces-throwing gibbon. Even after he is gone, one wonders who will be the new face, and whether we will continue the tumble downward, or resurrect liberal democracy in the United States of America.
